Creature Graphic Novels; A cut above the Rest

Creature Graphic Novels

Not much of anything surprises me these days when it comes to the world of comic books and more specifically the independent comic book market. There are many start ups that come and go within months sometimes so fast you do not even notice they were there in the first place. That is why it was rather nice when I got a call from John Ulloa of Creature Graphic Novels to come over and take a look at what he and the rest of the team at Creature have been working on. I can honestly say that I was rather pleasantly surprised; if not excited to see what he had to show me. John Ulloa is one of the many talents that make up Creature and has many years of experience in the independent comic book world. He was part of the team at High Impact Studios that brought us Double Impact back in the mid 90’s in the hay-day of independent comic books. John explained to me that Creature Graphic Novels has a kind of grassroots approach to putting their product into the hands of comic book readers. At the same time Creature is embracing new media; video, to create a unique niche in the market for their books. Each one of their books will also be released as a pseudo comic book/animation. They work on a modest budget as most independent publishers do but that doesn’t mean they are willing to put out a modest or sub-par product. For example the first print run of Forgive me Father #1 (their first book offering) came back from the printers recently a little too dark but still acceptable. They had the book sent back and reprinted because they wanted the tones and colors in the book to match their intended vision. Creature’s dedication to putting out a good quality product while maintaining a low budget and video/comic adaptations of their books will surely make them stand out against the more mediocre offerings out there right now.

Doctor Strange

Dr. Stephen Strange the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe will be getting his own animated movie this summer. The direct to DVD release will follow in the foot steps of the Ultimate Avengers and Iron Man animated features. While Dr. Strange may seem a strange choice ( no pun intended) to base a movie on; the good doctor is one of the oldest and most unique characters in the Marvel Universe.
