WTF is it about the movies I’ve seen recently? Why do they give me nothing to bitch about? This is a disturbing trend. First Live Free or Die Hard, then Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, then along comes Stardust, and now Balls of Fury. I should’ve listened to my instincts & gone to see Halloween, I bet that one I could’ve found fault with. Rob Zombie’s no John Carpenter. But no, I was in the mood to see a comedy.
I loved Balls of Fury. I ROFLMAOed as well as PMSL. It is a great movie. Well worth watching. In fact, those of you illegally downloading it for free are even gonna wanna donate some money to the film makers. Yup, that’s right it’s that good. Good enough to get cheap ass internet pirate film downloaders to kick in for it, even if their name is Captain Jack Sparrow.
The film itself is a parody or homage to Martial arts films & sports films that most of us grew up watching. There’s a lot of the Enter the Dragon feel in this movie, as well as an equal amount of A Fistful of Yen. This film differs from most other parodies in the fact that it seems to have heart. By heart I mean you could tell that everybody there was a fan of the Genre they were parodying & it came off that they were having fun with it rather than making fun of it. For example, Mel Brookes makes fun of the genre’s he’s parodying, Ben Garant doesn’t. Am I saying he’s as good as or better than Mel? Well, let’s just say they could sit at the same table in the cafeteria.
The acting was very good, very funny, made even funnier by great comedic performances from actors that you don’t normally expect comedy from, like Maggie Q, Robert Patrick, & Jason Scott Lee. Maggie Q, who caught my attention in this summer’s Live Free or Die Hard, turns out to be a very funny actress. Though her role seems to be that of the straight person in the film she does a lot of physical comedy, she’s got a gift for it. I wasn’t expecting that, then again I shouldn’t have been surprised; she was in one of the best fight scenes of a very testosterone filled summer. I hope to see her do more comedy in the future. As the romantic lead in the film, Ms Q really shined through (shown through?) Kudos to you Maggie. You really don’t expect comedy form Robert Patrick either, yeah I know he’s done comedic cameos before, but you just don’t expect it from the guy. His role is short, but important & sets up a lot of the film. It was also cool to see Jason Scott Lee on the big screen, welcome back dude. Haven’t seen you up there since Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story. The last thing I saw him in was Lilo & Stitch. He’s another surprisingly funny actor. Someone get this guy more work, or at least a better agent.
The film stars Dan Fogler, whom I’ve never seen before (Seriously, I haven’t seen a single thing he’s done, sorry dude) but regardless of whether I’ve seen him before or not, the guy manages to carry the film. Actually, not only does he manage to carry the movie, he & James Hong manage to hold their own against Christopher Walken, who as y’all know steals scenes whenever you put him in a comedy. You expect that from a veteran actor like Hong (the guy has 314 movie, TV, cartoon, & videogame projects under his belt & most of y’all don’t even know his name, talk about underrated.) but you really don’t expect that from a relative new comer like Fogler. As for Walken, there’s not much to be said, he does the usual bang up job we have come to expect from him, definite A+ work, again. Is it me or has Walken been taking more & more comedic roles lately?
George Lopez, Thomas Lennon & Diedrich Bader, add a lot of laughs to an already funny, funny movie. They didn’t need to get these guys, the movie was already funny, but luckily the director decided to exceed the MPAA legal comedic limit & added them to the cast. This is what happens when you let a fucking funny guy make a fucking funny movie, the audience breaks out in laughter, and this is definitely the most I’ve laughed in a theatre since the Simpsons Movie.
Before I go, I gotta mention that there were background characters that just popped off the screen, gotta thank Cathy Shim, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, Kerri Kenney, Na Shi La, & Aisha Tyler for adding to the fun & for not blending into the background. With all the talent in the movie it would have been easy to get lost, but you didn’t let that happen. Y’all rock.
It’s a fucking funny film y’all. Well worth the price of admission. Damn fine piece of cinema.
Editors Note: I finally gave up on trying to censor John’s foul language.
