Starring Guy Pearce, Danny Huston, Emily Watson, Ray Winstone
If you looking for a good old fashioned cowboy movie like Roy Rogers or the Cisco Kid, stay the hell away from this flick. If, however, you like Grit with your Gore then, by all means, this is your kind of film.
It’s the 1890’s, and Arthur Burns, played by Danny Huston (21 Grams, Silver City) and his gang of thugs have committed a horrific crime, to a farm family in rural Australia. Captain Stanley, played by Ray Winstone, (The Chronicles of Narnia, Cold Mountain) the local police captain, has captured Arthur’s two brothers. The captain offers to spare their lives if the older brother played by Guy Pearce (Memento, The Time Machine and The Count of Monte Cristo) will capture Arthur.
This movie goes from suspenseful to down right unbearably intense. The captain’s wife played by Emily Watson (Corpse Bride, Red Dragon) gets involved unwillingly in the drama. By the end of this movie everyone in it will be changed, mostly for the worse. You will get an authentic view of nineteenth century Oz and all its flies.
Not going to waste our time trying to describe the carnage in this film directed by John Hillcoat (Digital Hardcore Videos, To Have and to Hold) from a script by Nick Cave (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) . There is music, just not the music you might expect.
Somewhere, Sam Peckinpah is looking down on this movie and saying to himself, “I wish I had done this film.”
