Yes it’s a remake, yes it has the requisite slightly over the hill actors doing heroic things. What you need to remember is this is a setup for The Poseidon Inquest. You want to know what the hell I’m talking about, read on.
The movie stars Josh Lucas (Glory Road, An Unfinished Life and Hulk) the reluctant leader and ultimate villain. We also have Kurt Russell (Dreamer, Sky High and Miracle) who plays Robert Ramsey a former Fire Fighter and NYC Mayor and his Daughter Jennifer played by Emmy Rossum (The Phantom of the Opera , The Day After Tomorrow and Mystic River) And Mike Vogel (Caffeine, Rumor Has It and Havoc) as her boy friend /Fiancé. We also have
Jacinda Barrett ( Ladder 49, The Human Stain and Urban Legends Final Cut) plays Maggie James the overprotective mother of Conor James played by Jimmy Bennett ( Firewall, Hostage, Ever Wood) The obligatory annoying kid that keeps getting into danger but proves his usefulness.
We have three that don’t make the cut, people need to die to make us care about the rest of the group. Freddy Rodriguez (Six Feet Under, Dreamer, and Havoc { the movie Ann Hathaway did before Brokeback Mountain} ) and Kevin Dillon ( Entourage, Out for Blood and 24) as Lucky Larry and Mia Maestro ( Alias, Deep Water and the Motorcycle Diaries) I would have traded them the mother and the kid to save Stacy Ferguson ( Be Cool, Saturday Night Live,Married with Children and the Blackeyed Peas) only because I like cute Blond singers.
I would be kicked out of the Movie Reviewers Guild If I didn’t mention Richard Dreyfuss (Copshop, Silver City and the Goodbye Girl) channeling his character from The Goodbye Girl(rent the movie)
Wolfgang Peterson ( Troy, The Perfect Storm and Air Force One) directs a script written by Mark Protosevich ( The Cell, I Am Legend, Thor and John Carter of Mars) Thor and John Carter are in production and no they weren’t satisfied with the T V version of Thor where he rode with Bikers.
Ok, I promised to explain why there should be a sequel The Poseidon Inquest. After every Shipwreck or disaster there is always an inquest. An investigation is made and a maritime court is convened if it is deemed necessary. Not to give away too much but our merry band of survivors opened something they shouldn’t have and caused the ship to take on more water and sink faster. This doomed the other passengers that were still alive. At the very least the group should be charged with involuntary manslaughter. Go see the movie and see if my logic holds up.
